What does it take to be a middle layer girl in collegiate pyramids? Are they taller than the top girl and is it possible for a female base in high school to make the transition to a middle layer girl in a coed collegiate squad? Thanks! Smiley

From my college experience, there was no "hierarchy" of flyers.

When you're dealing with a co-ed program, particularly a Division 1 program, every girl is a flyer. So honestly, every girl in the pyramid has to be good.  There is no "oh you're in the middle so you are not as good as the girl on top."  We ALL had to be the very top girl at some point, so we were all phenomenal flyers.

On a co-ed team, there are no girls who are "always" middle or "always the very top." Every girl has to have experience with BOTH positions in the pyramid. No one can try out for a cheer team, and solely be "middle part of the pyramid" she has to have experience with other positions.

coolcoach is right. if you are on a coed team, you more than likely will be doing both. depending on the school though as a incoming freshman you might be middle layer, just for experience reasons.

as far as height is concerned it doesn't matter if the middle layer is taller or shorter than the top girl, just as long as the two middle girls are about the same heights, so that the top girl can stand on them evenly. a lot of middle layers know how to base as well, this helps them, because its just like basing, but in the air. as long as you can do a toss shoulder stand and are able to stay extremely tight, then of course a you could be a middle layer in college.
