When I was a freshman in HS, my dance team coach made us keep a food diary over the summer. They brought in a nutrionist to talk to us about eating healthy and how to figure out our "ideal" calorie consumption to maintain our weight. We had a large number of girls who either weren't eating enough or weren't eating right, and our coach wanted to make sure everyone's eating habits were healthy. I think it wsa really beneficial to me because it made me realize just how often I reached for the chocolate or chips rather than something healthy. I also realized I wasn't eating near enough to counter the calories dance was taking out of me, and that I'd start losing muscle which would be counter-productive. They also showed us what 2 pounds of fat looked like -disgusting! Basically, what I'm saying is keeping a food diary made me a healthier snacker and can definitely help you see negative trends
