Question: Should cheerleaders be exempt from school dress codes on game days?
Yes! After all, we're all about school spirit!
If other athletes are exempt we should be also.
No, because it gives special treatment.

Our girls wear their unifoms on game days with the turtle neck and leggings underneath.  The boys wear Khakis, shirt w/tie and jackets that the school provides.  The drill team has a shirt that matches w/ jeans.

We are looking at a jersey that is fitted and has their graduation year on it, with jeans for this next year.  There are no shorts allowed in school, and no sleeveless tops, so I'm hoping this will be a more comfortable day for the girls.  They don't always like wearing the short skirts to class, even though they have on the leggings.

We should be allowed to wear them, especially if other teams are allowed to wear theirs! It's not as if everyone doesn't see us in our uniforms at games and pep rallies and stuff like that anyway! Or as if they've never seen a person in a uniform before! Sad Roll Eyes Huh Cool Shocked Grin Cheesy Wink Smiley Roll Eyes Tongue Embarrassed Lips sealed Undecided Kiss Cry

I agree with the board, Cheerleaders should not wear their uniform during school, that encourages other students to wear similar revealing clothes.

You know this is a very good topic, our girls love their cheer uniform, but at the same time, they would kill me for just thinking about wearing it the whole school day.
its fun and short and perfect for cheerleading but its not the way the girls want  8)GUYS Cool to see their leggs during a school day.

what to do? Huh

what we came up with was another uniform, that still refects our school spirit, and at the same times it dosent breake the rules.

they wear jeans and a polo shirt with the school logo and glitter make-up and just really cute stuff.
or they have their sweats and t-shirts that they wear only on fridays.
we also made t-shirts during the year to just wear on fridays just so they match.

try making a YWO t-shirt (ours was in hot pink)

they are other ways to have school spirit with out having to go to the extream, just buy a different uniform Smiley

Listen if the uniform isn't midriff and the skirt isn't a belt (you know what I mean), then what is the big deal.

The "guys" are gonna see their legs at the game, right?  What is the big deal.

"Oooh its not fair to everyone else that doesn't get to wear a skirt that short."  Tough nuts sister.  Life isn't fair.  You want to wear a cheerleading uniform to school?  Work out, get in shape, muster some school spirit and make the squad.

Its game day people.  Don't we have bigger things to worry about.

Hey all!

First, welcome back to the boards! I've missed everyone!!

Second, I believe it comes down to the individual school, the community, and the culture of that school for there is no one answer that will assuage, satisfy, or make everyone happy.

Where one school may feel that by allowing the cheerleaders to wear their uniforms to school is violating dress code or creating a situation of showing some type of "leniency," another school may find it not only appropriate, but necessary to cultivate pride in the colors, school spirit, and even certain recognition for all the athletes that work so hard to represent their school and community.

My high school cheerleaders ABSOLUTELY wear their entire uniform to school. It is a classy uniform and though it is "shorter" in the length of the skirt than what they "normally" allow for girls to wear, it is not obscene in anyway and based on the overall look of what they are wearing, it is often more appropriate than the jean and tight t-shirt combinations that many young ladies wear.

I think schools have put guidelines in place because of the "extremes" that people took their attire to but most are understanding of the gray lines that do exist and of the difference between an appropriate uniform that is recognizeable and that is seen by the entire community every Friday night vs. a short jean skirt worn only for the shock value and with no other purpose.

Just my thoughts!! Thanks for sharing everyone! Great discussion!

At the end of each sports season, the school has a celebration at which students are allowed to wear their team uniforms or T-shirts from the extracurricular activities.

I agree.  We had a similar flap over the skirts at the school I coach at, the irony being the person who had the loudest voice was the one who has a "Question Authority" bumper sticker prominently displayed on the bulletin board in her office.  And she was whining about how I should order the girls to put something on underneath their uniforms at once!  (So much for questioning authority, huh)?  I decided, since cheer is new at this school, to pick my battles, and have my girls wear leggings underneath their skirts.  I also made it a point to share the Hawaii Pacific University Stunting video from their website to prove a point about how wearing knee length poodle skirts is totally impractical.  The woman with the Question Authority sticker was the one who suggested we have skirts the same length as what was worn in the '50's!  Since I coach cheerleading at a school that is 98% Native American, I made it a point from the get go to make us a very strong stunt squad because no one was expecting much from us anyway, and lately people have been very pleasantly surprised at what we have accomplished.  Especially people from some of the higher income schools we play against, which is always good for the ego.
