It actually has the exact pyramid of the one ucacheeralum posted and shows the dismount!

Not quite the exact same pyramid (only 2 1/2 high) but the same dismount.  Ah - gotta love the 80's.  Great video - great find.

I appreciate that the video has the AACCA url at the end...did they have something to do with putting that together?

OK, I have some pics.

This one is a 3-high split catch - which is illegal at all levels now, even at 2-high.  As I recall, the middle guy jumped off the front and the two bases cradled the girl.  (That's me in a cradle in the middle front.  Can't remember what I had just done. :-)

Here we're doing back tuck basket tosses - no back spot.  That's me in the front doing a single-based back tuck/cradle from hands - no spot.

And here we are getting ready to do the same thing...no spotters...on the basketball court.

One time I did the back tuck partner stunt on the basketball court and rotated too slowly.  I kicked the guy's hands away from the cradle and ended up with a concussion.  It made the local paper.

I loved stunting.

I do believe the History of...videos were a Varsity/AACCA thing. I saw some of them at camp during a coaches meeting.

Jan - in that last picture you guys are getting the "evil cheer eye" from the opposing team's squad.

Love the socks.

Ok - I'm having so much fun with this!  Thanks for prompting me to pull out my old pictures!

Here are the actual back tucks on the basketball court.  (I knew I had it - it was in a different album, since I had it blown up!)  I'm the one in the front - I got some good air from just one guy, huh?

Also, check out the size of these pom poms!

Don't know if you can see it here, but I have a bandaid on my shin, covering stitches that I obtained while stunting on the roof of a campus bar during an appearance.  There was a little pipe sticking out of the roof, and it went into my leg.  I could see my bone.

This picture was taken the day we beat Michigan to clinch the 1983 Rose Bowl bid.

Great memories.

Jan, these are wicked awesome pics. Thanks for sharing them and the memories that go with them. (Although I could maybe have done without the bone visual. *shudder*  LOL)

Oh my word  Shocked Shocked Shocked I am so glad there are the regulations now, I would be scared to do half of those things with my squad. That pyramid that fell forward into the dive foward roll scared the living daylight out of my - goodness knows how the girls were able to do it. I suppose though if you were used to doing more dangerous stuff then the fear factor wasnt as great. But, oye, I'm glad we cant do them now!

I can't look at youtube.com on my work computer but I'm betting that forward fall is a tension drop/roll.  Back in the early 90's I was an instructor for a (mainly) private camp company & remember some of the other instructors doing a pyramid with 3, 2-1-1's into a a tension drop.  It looked so cool but you'd never catch me up as the top level flyer.

Jan--WOW on the pics.  That is some awesome air for single and double base tosses!  The split catches bring back memories.  I cheered at a Div. II school that had a *meh* cheer program.  I remember my partner and I finally nailing one and thinking we were so cool LOL!  We upped the "coolness" with a roll-down as a dismount . . . no spotter of course.  Wonder I was never dropped and got a concussion or rib/back/chest injury.  After I graduated, one of the girls I cheered with broke her wrist and arm (badly enough to require surgery) falling forward out of a split catch.    We never thought of what could happen rolling off the back  Shocked.

LCSD1coach--If you have the pics in an online album, I thnk you just insert the pic  by doing [img ] pic addy [\ img] except take out the spaces in the brackets.

Oh! Jandotcom, you are a brave soul!! Just looking at the picture of you tucking on the court makes me nervous! No wonder (and thank goodness!) we have rules now! I can only imagine what we would be doing now had there never been any rules put in place!

I'm not sure if AACCA had anything to do with it or not. I noticed the video said part 2 so I went looking for part one and found it plus one from the seventies. The 70's one has varsity.com in the corner so they actually may have done all the videos.

As a UCA instructor, I know that the video clips from the 70s were taken in the formative years of UCA at some of their camps.  The 1970s were well before safety rules (either AACCA or NFHS) were put in place as you can see by the proponderance of now illegal skills as well as the use of mini-trampolines.

The first 80s video is made up of clips taken from various UCA College Demos during the 1980s up to and including 1986.

The 80s II video also has clips from various UCA College Demos from the 1980s (some of the same videos as 80s I), but the majority of that montage is made up of the championship routines at UCA Nationals from 1980, 1981, and 1986.

These clips have appeared on and off over the past 5+ years in choreography tapes/DVDs that head instructors could show in coaches meetings to provide some history, levity, and to help drive home the importance of safety and knowing current safety rules.
