I have been working on my standing tuck for over a year. I finally landed it by myself back in December but never got it consistent. I throw my head back every time and sometimes i could manage to get it around. I havent landed one by myself since march or april and i have to have it by the end of summer in order to compete with my team. I really need some tips on the whole throwing my head back problem cause it would kill me to not be able to compete.

What I do with my girls when they are consistently throwing their heads back is to give them a pair of balled up socks (or a smally teddy bear or whatever) to tuck under their chin and then have them practice the BT like this. The first few times the socks come flying out but soon they usually get the hang of it. Those who dont I have them go back onto the tumble track, again with the socks, and see if they can do it there. If they can it is just a matter of technique and power if they cant then we start right back with the basics and spotting.

Diptera suggested a good idea. We have another drill called jump backs we do to prevent the head going back and to set up. We stack up the pyramid mats that velcro together. The height should be right under the shoulder blades to be most effective. You have to sit and jump back and bring your knees to your chest. You should land on the top of the mat on your back with your knees in your chest. If you throw your head back it will ram into the mat, so by doing them on the mat it will eventually teach you the technique you need to not throw your head back.
